Facing Digital Intelligence Transformation, Shaping the Future Theatre

- STA Insights on "Studies of Future Theatre"

As a new wave of digital intelligence technologies is significantly reshaping the global theatre ecosystem, Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA) hosts an international symposium on Future Theatre: The Evolution of Theatrical Art in the Digital Intelligence Age on April 26. The symposium aims to help grasp the emerging trends of art, promote the forward-looking transformation of theatre research paradigms, and encourage the establishment of a knowledge system of “Studies of Future Theatre” that adapts to the new era, primarily referring to the systematic and theoretical interpretation of emerging theatre phenomena. The following insights have been put forward:

I. To face the Digital Intelligence Transformation and Explore New Frontiers of Theatre Art

We endorse the utilization of frontier technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), as transformative agents in theatre creation to assist in script composition, visual exploration, and the construction of multi-dimensional spaces. We encourage the application of XR, interactive media, and spatial computing technologies to overcome the constraints of traditional physical theatres, thereby reshaping the temporal-spatial experience and performer-audience relationship. We advocate the exploration of pioneering forms, including human-machine performance and cross-media interaction, which will enrich multi-sensory immersive experiences and leverage technological progress to comprehensively innovate theatre forms. Throughout all these efforts, we reaffirm the central role of human artists in core decision-making and aesthetic creation.

II. To Deepen Theoretical Exploration and Jointly Establish the Academic System of Studies of Future Theatre

We appeal to the global community of theatre studies to expedite the transformation of research paradigms, shifting the focus from “reviewing the past” to an equal emphasis on “reflecting the present” and “envisioning the future”. We support the interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral integration to dynamically adapt the existing theatre knowledge system. We advocate the breakaway from conventional ways of thinking and path dependence, and strengthen fundamental theoretical research on emerging theatre forms, industries, and ecosystems. We encourage the development of new concepts, definition of new categories, and formation of new expressions to offer theoretical interpretations of emerging theatre trends, aiming to jointly establish a theoretical framework for the Studies of Future Theatre that is suitable for the development of new quality productive forces.

III. To Focus on Industrial Transformation in Response to the Emerging Theatre Ecosystem

We advocate the in-depth integration of industry, academia, research, and application in response to the changes in theatre forms and ecosystems against the background of integrated development of culture, tourism, commerce, sports, and exhibitions, promoting the synergetic progress of theatre education, research, and industry. We appeal to the global theatre academia and industry to jointly address the challenges posed by AI-assisted creation, including disputes over copyright ownership, confirmation of rights concerning digital assets, and the reshaping of artistic evaluation standards, collaboratively establishing relevant international standards and industry compliance frameworks to effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of creators.

IV. To Uphold Humanistic Nature and Preserve the Fundamental Values of Theatre

We reaffirm the humanistic nature of theatre art and stress that human creativity and living heritage must never be supplanted or disrupted by technology. With the intensifying application of technologies in theatre creation, we must resolutely guard against the spectacle trap of “technological determinism”, the proliferation of instrumental rationality, and algorithmic bias. We call upon global colleagues to closely monitor the profound issues arising from the deep penetration of digital intelligence technologies, including ethical challenges, the blurred boundaries of the subject, and emotional alienation. We will consistently prioritize understanding human nature, nurturing human hearts, and conveying humanistic care, ensuring that technology remains imbued with the warmth of humanity.

V. To Strengthen Global Cooperation and Build an Open Academic Community

We will establish a regular international academic platform for the Studies of Future Theatre in due course to bring together cutting-edge strengths from theatre universities, research institutions, performing arts industries, and technology enterprises across the globe. We encourage the removal of disciplinary and industrial barriers and the transcendence of geographical, national, and stylistic boundaries, so as to share high-quality academic and artistic resources and cultivate interdisciplinary talents well versed in both technology and humanities. Through mutual learning among civilizations and collaborative innovation, we aim to transform the in-depth integration of art and technology into a powerful driving force for global cultural diversity and the sustainable development of the theatre ecosystem.

We aspire to establish a global network of collaborative innovation for the Studies of Future Theatre and are committed to facilitating the implementation of the above insights within relevant professional domains and institutions. We also appeal to the international community to build common understanding and act in concert to seize the opportunities presented by the digital intelligence era, turning the evolution and innovation of theatre art into a vital momentum for a flourishing global culture ecosystem and an enriched spiritual world of humanity.
